Casey Chaos Profile
Casey was born and raised in New Jersey, at the age of eight Casey's mother moved the family to Florida, this is where Casey states he lost his love for the country he was born into. It was here amidst the evangelical, redneck, and swamp loving police state that Casey felt an intolerable isolation. Sensing no way out, he devoted significant amounts of energy to self-destruction.
"I hated everything and everyone around me," he recalls.
"I think moving to Florida at that early age was as violent as it would be getting ganged raped as a child. Within the first week of living there five guys at school jumped me. I was riding my bike down the hall and these guys grabbed the handle bars and the next thing I remember is seeing a wall and being in hospital with concussion. I had this huge bump on my head and black eyes and they used to call me raccoon boy. It took me six weeks but I followed them home individually on random days and completely beat the shit out of them, because I knew that if I would have let that go it would have just continued. In an incident like this I think that sometimes violence is a necessary thing. I think it is necessary in American society because if it would happen more often like that you wouldn't have the Columbine shooting, just some kids with bloody noses."
"There wasn't a single person I could identify with so I turned to skateboarding as my outlet. I was only 10 when I went on tour and the people I was around were a lot older than I was. They smoked pot and I hated their fucking hippie mentality. I was this little hyper guy and I discovered that cocaine made me feel better and from there I moved on to heroin. It was abundant in Florida and it helped me escape the mundane and totally lost civilization I was living in."
By the time Casey was 16 he stopped taking drugs but the chemicals had already ravaged his adolescent body leaving permanent damage on his weakened system. Diagnosed with a lung disorder he continues to take medication for enduring breathing difficulties. At 14, skateboarding took a back seat to his newly discovered passion for hardcore and punk rock. The pissed off rantings of Black Flag signaled that there were other people out there who were just like him. "I broke a lot of bones when I was skateboarding so when I had downtime we would have jam sessions," says Chaos of his first band, "they would play their K-Mart guitars and I would just scream. I played in hardcore bands, which is how I ended up doing what I am doing now. It wasn't even about being in a band really, it was more just an outlet for expression."
Amen was born some in 1994 after Chaos' angst ridden combo Disorderly Conduct bit the dust. It was then that he met ex-Wrathchild America and Ugly Kid Joe drummer, Shannon Larkin. After the American chart sensations broke up, Larkin spent 18 months checking out tapes from 30 bands around the LA district and stumbling upon tape 29, heard "Coma America." He decided this was the band for him and set up an audition through Ross Robinson. At this point Chaos had tried out 100 drummers, but it took all of 20 seconds for him to realize Larkin was the man.
When Chaos first moved to California, finding himself without any furniture, the first purchase made for his apartment was a padded coffin. "I didn't have a bed and this guy I knew was at a flea market and said there was a coffin there and when he told me the price I said, 'Go get it, I slept in it for a couple of months but I never pulled the lid down as it would get too hot and stifling in there. I know people think it is weird but it didn't bother me at all. I must be so desensitized to so many things."
